Should Playing Music Create Tingling Wrists?

Carpal Tunnel and Musicians
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition caused when pressure is applied to the median nerve as it passes through the wrist. When playing a musical instrument, especially for hours at a time for several days in a row, the fast repetitive movements of the fingers can cause the tendons—all nine of them—that travel through the carpal tunnel to rub together, creating friction. This leads to heat and eventually swelling or inflammation, which manifests as pain, numbness, and tingling. Without treatment or modifications to your practice schedule, it is likely the numbness/tingling in your hands and fingers will gradually worsen and may even completely prohibit you from playing your instrument.

We must accept that every tissue in our body has a certain capacity or threshold, and if it is exceeded, problems will surface, and there are factors that can make some of us MORE SUSCEPTIBLE to CTS. Some of these differences include: female gender, age over 50, hormone imbalances (low thyroid function, diabetes, and others), birth control pill (BCP) usage, pregnancy, obesity, and manually intensive jobs. Personality can even play a role—if you’re someone who will push yourself to play through the pain, then your risk for CTS is greater.

Because both hands are typically required to play an instrument, it is more common than not that BOTH hands may eventually become symptomatic if you don’t practice some VERY SIMPLE preventative “tricks of the trade.” So what are those tricks?

Take 30-60 second mini-breaks every hour during your practice sessions to stretch. Simply BEND your wrist and fingers back as far as you can with your other hand or against a wall (fingers pointing downward) and try to touch your palm to the wall. […]

Chiropractic for Ear Infections

Why Chiropractic Care is Being Recommended for Ear Infections
I was recently on a Mom forum where a distraught mother complained about her two-year-old’s chronic ear infections. She was tortured over the notion of giving her daughter yet another antibiotic which seemed to do nothing but guarantee a return of the ear infection.

This Mom’s concerns weren’t unfounded. For decades, the evidence-based research about antibiotics has shown that not only are they ineffective at treating ear infections, but they will actually lead to repeated ear infections in the future. In 2004 the American Academy of Pediatrics began its “watch and wait” approach to treating ear infections with antibiotics.

I was thrilled to read in the comments, under this mother’s post, that many other mothers were suggesting chiropractic care citing their positive experiences. One Mom reported “My children used to be on antibiotics more than they were off them due to ear infections, sinus infections, strep throat etc. Once we began chiropractic care we said goodbye to all that drama.”

Chiropractors will tell you that they don’t treat ear infections. So how is it that so many parents report that their children under chiropractic care no longer suffer from ear infections? Among many pediatricians who seek safer options for children, well renowned Dr. Sears recently said that he encourages chiropractic care to avoid the onset of ear infections.

Why? Because misalignment of the spinal bones can cause undue pulling on the child’s neck muscles creating tension to their eustachian tubes. The subsequent dysfunction of these tubes to drain lymphatic fluid causes an increased risk of infection. The chiropractic adjustment aims to reduce the tension of misalignments all throughout the body–restoring normal physiology.

Is Chiropractic Safe for Kids?

Chiropractic Care for Children is Safe, Gentle and Effective
With the evolution of modern health care, more options and choices are now available for those seeking to manage their own health. Chiropractic for children is becoming one of the most popular choices. In the late 1990s, an average of 30 million pediatric visits were made to chiropractors. Chiropractic effectiveness and safety studies to date have pointed out that there is no clear evidence of harm to-date, and the purpose of this study [1] is to shine further light on to the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments on children. To do so, a study survey was created and sent to over 2000 practicing chiropractors and parents whose children have undergone or are undergoing chiropractic care.

The survey covered multiple topics of inquiry, including the reason the parents sought care, what type of adjusting techniques were used, and what kind of outcomes were seen with care. Outcomes were categorized into improvements, aggravations, such as worsened symptoms or complaints following adjustments, and complications, including fractures, sprains, strains, strokes, or death. The results were positive from both parents and practitioners. The chiropractic survey showed that of 577 pediatric cases, totaling over 5000 visits, only 3 aggravations of muscles stiffness or soreness were reported, all of which were minor, and were addressed by the practitioner. There were no reports of complications.

The results of the parent survey were similar, showing that of 239 children and 1735 visits, 162 parents reported improvements, 2 reported aggravations, and none reported complications. Overall, the safety results, as reported by parents, showed that 0.83% of the population, or 1 in every 867 visits, resulted in minor adverse events.

What was staggering about the results were the reasons […]

Concussion Recovery – You’ve Bruised Your Brain Now What?

Concussion Recovery – You’ve Bruised Your Brain Now What?

How to Recover from a Concussion

There are many myths and confusion about how to care for your brain after you experience a concussion.

Many people don’t realize the severity of even a mild concussion and that they can be caused by a direct or indirect hit to the head or body.

Not all concussions are suffered by athletes while playing sports. Falls and accidents can cause them, too. All concussions are serious injuries that can have severe repercussions if not managed properly. Proper care during the first 7 – 10 days is crucial to ensure optimal recovery.

Immediately following the Concussion Injury

Two to three hours following the incident you should remain awake and be monitored.
You should NOT DRIVE or be left alone.
You can now sleep for 2-3 hour increments.
Someone should wake you every 3 hours, and ask simple questions to ensure that a more serious brain injury hasn’t occurred.

If you feel fine following the incident but notice any of the following symptom, you should seek emergency care as soon as possible:

Rapid deterioration of symptoms
Severe headache with sudden onset • Slurring
Inability to be woken up
Repeated vomiting

Think of a concussion like any other injury such as a sprained ankle or a broken arm. What would you normally do to manage those types of injuries? Rest!

The problem is that we don’t always know what it means to ‘rest’ our brain. If you go right back to work or school, or resume any physical or mental activity, it’s as though you are going for a run on a sprained ankle, which is not conducive to healing. Remember the brain needs a LOT of energy to heal.

There is a 30-day window following the incident in […]

New Research Shows Chiropractic Care Helps Dizziness and Balance Disorders

New Research Shows Chiropractic Care Helps Dizziness and Balance Disorders

Dizziness and Chiropractic
Injury to the head and neck can be extremely unpleasant. What a subset of professionals understand, however, is that it frequently leads to dizziness and balanced disorders. Recently published research indicates that chiropractic care frequently helps with these problems.
Research Just Published
A research study published last month, investigates the effectiveness of chiropractic care for people with dizziness and other balance problems. After meta-analysis of the 2008 National Health Survey, a positive correlation was found.

Why is this important? Because 11% of the respondents of the survey reported having dysequillibrium issues like dizziness and an off-balance feeling. Of these 35% were 65 or older, and the majority younger than 65.

The people surveyed reported a significant perception of being helped by a chiropractor. They were more likely to have improvement in their dizziness if they had experienced head or neck trauma or if they had been diagnosed with a neurological or muscular condition.
Dizziness and the Craniocervical Junction
Atlas Spinal Care, a chiropractic office in Upland, CA, we help many people with dizziness, vertigo, and other balance disorders due to the fact that the focus of our practice is on restoring function to the head and neck.

A structural shift where the head and neck meet, known as the Atlas Subluxation Complex (ASC), will frequently cause functional disruption to the nerve pathways responsible for our equillibrium. Simple manipulation or muscle work in this area often is not enough for the condition to resolve due to the complexity of the craniocervical junction (CCJ). This area of the spine is anatomically unique as compared with the rest of the spine, and as such requires a unique approach.

Additional training is required for Doctors of Chiropractic to provide precision realignment of the head and neck. This training is obtained through the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic […]

Digital Dizziness: The Natural Solution to a Technological Problem

Digital Dizziness: The Natural Solution to a Technological Problem

After sitting for an extended period of time and getting up, have you ever felt light headed or dizzy, even if for a few seconds? A new study is showing that this may be indicative of a major problem. Data is showing that this indicates a problem that is taking place in the nervous system, which is responsible for regulating blood flow and controls the amount of oxygen getting to every part of the body, especially the brain. Typically, this type of symptom would be classified under the diagnosis of vertigo.

There is a new way that dizziness is affecting a lot of people, and it is called cyber sickness aka Digital Motion Sickness. One of the downfalls of modern convenience and technology is that it can be overwhelming to how the body processes information. Traditional motion sickness happens when the muscles and joints sense motion, but the eyes do not see it. With Digital Motion Sickness the opposite happens, the eyes see motion as it happens on a screen or smart device, but the body does not feel it. The condition is more likely to affect women, people with a history of migraines or concussions, and Type A (perfectionist) personalities.1

Vertigo specialist, Dr. Tymothy Flory, is helping patients get natural relief from vertigo in Upland, California. Dr. Flory is an Upper Cervical Chiropractor who focuses on the Atlas Bone (C1 vertebra). The Atlas bone can have a profound effect on balance issues if it is misaligned as it is related to the Eustachian tube in the ear. In a clinical study of 60 patients with Vertigo receiving Upper Cervical Chiropractic care, 48 patients had total resolution of symptoms, and the remaining 12 patients had […]

Moody Migraines and How to Get Relief

Headaches are a condition that affects millions of people across the San Diego area and the entire world. Estimates in America say that out of 100 people, 12 have migraines.1 Due to the large number of people that suffer from headaches and the debilitating effects, they are also causing headaches for many healthcare providers.

British researchers have recently established a timeline of when to start expecting certain health conditions. Migraines are to be expected at the age of 24 according to this new study.2 This should be somewhat of a shock to many people as migraines are not something that should happen, especially at such a young age. Migraines are a condition that is often a result of the body not being able to adapt properly to stress.

A more natural approach to treating migraine headaches is helping many people regain their health. Migraine specialist Dr. Tymothy Flory is able to provide natural relief to headache patients through upper cervical chiropractic care. This unique treatment is focused on finding the fundamental cause of migraines, typically the Atlas bone (C1 vertebra). Research has shown a high correlation between an Atlas misalignment in the neck with patients suffering from headaches.

When the Atlas is misaligned the brain and nervous system are affected by abnormal blood flow and neurological function.3 By specifically analyzing and tailoring a custom adjustment to each person migraines have been scientifically proven to improve in as little as 1-2 upper cervical chiropractic adjustments.4

When the Atlas is properly aligned, the brain and nervous system can function optimally improving many conditions in the body. Once this is achieved, the body can properly self-regulate and begin the healing process.

Relief for Lingering Neck Pain

Do you have neck pain in an area that always seems to bother you? Do you notice cracking or popping in your neck that will not go away? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then keep reading.

Research done recently has shown that pain in your neck area may actually be affecting other areas of the body. With modern technology, we can see far more deeply into the human body than previously. What have we learned?

For one thing, a misalignment, also called subluxation, of the Atlas bone (the C1 vertebra) can cause abnormal blood flow to the brain. This sends mixed signals to the body. Another thing learned is that this misalignment affects the central nervous system. In turn, there is a decrease in neurological function. What this reveals is that the brain may actually be feeling more pain than what is really happening.

Neck pain that is chronic in nature may seem to be happening only in the neck area, but it can affecting other areas throughout the body. When you feel a crick in your neck, it may suggest other medical conditions.

So What Can You Do About Neck Pain?
Upper cervical chiropractors, such as Dr. Tymothy Flory of Upland, California, specialize in the spine and upper neck area. They realize how important a healthy spine is to the nervous system and the brain. They use methods that are unique to finding the spot in your neck that is misaligned. Then, they are able to create a specific treatment just for you. This is done with gentle methods. There is no popping, twisting, or cracking. The adjustment is only given when necessary to correct your problem.

When the spine gets properly aligned, and […]

Multiple Sclerosis: The Cells and the Swelling

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating, degenerative neurological disorder that affects young adults. MS primarily affects adults from the age of 20-40 years old and has increased by 50% since 1991.1Women are affected by MS twice as many times than men are.

MS can be very devastating because of the damage caused to the brain and central nervous system (CNS). Viewed by some experts as an autoimmune condition, MS turns normal brain tissue and the layer of fatty insulation around nerves into scar tissue.2 This causes symptoms such as

Brain fog
Visual disturbances

Researchers are working to uncover new knowledge to help understand the disease better. There are a group of cells known as T-cells and B-cells that play a role in how the disease progresses. The T-cells are known for attacking the myelin around the nerve, and B-cells are shown to promote inflammation. However, it is now known that there are many different types of B-cells. There are certain types of B-cells that may limit inflammation and even have a positive effect on MS.3 This knowledge may lead to the production of new drugs in the future, but the role of inflammation and MS has been known in natural relief of Multiple Sclerosis.

In Upland, California MS expert Dr. Tymothy Flory is helping patients get natural relief from MS. Dr. Flory is an Upper Cervical Chiropractor taking a new approach to MS by focusing on the Atlas bone (C1 vertebra). The Atlas bone plays an important role in how the brain and nervous system function. If the Atlas bone is misaligned, it affects how the brain functions, and that may lead to MS type symptoms.
Clinical studies have shown that in MS patients a misalignment of the neck can […]

Whiplash: Getting Your Head on Straight with the Facts

Many people suffer from whiplash and its symptoms long after the wreckage has been cleared. 68% of people in accidents experience damage and degeneration to the spine.1 Once you have whiplash, it is difficult to recover as patients experience the symptoms for as long as 5-10 years.1

Whiplash can leave long-lasting effects as it can damage the muscles in the neck, the ligaments that maintain proper position of the bones, and overall brain function. There is new science showing the effects of whiplash on an often overlooked part of the body known as the Cranio-Cervical Junction.

The founder of the MRI looked at the brain function in patients with injuries to the cranio-cervical junction, where the skull meets the neck and the rest of the spinal column. It was discovered that fluid flow was distorted and could eventually manifest as degenerative neurological diseases as a result of lack of oxygen.2 Many of the patients who suffered from diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis reported having a neck injury prior to progression of symptoms.

Dr. Tymothy Flory, a whiplash specialist in Upland, CA helps whiplash patients get natural relief, as an Upper Cervical Chiropractor focusing on maintaining the proper alignment of the upper neck. This method involves using exact testing to ensure that the Atlas (C1) bone is properly aligned at the base of the skull and top of the neck. If the Atlas is misaligned, the brain cannot receive the proper information to function and heal properly.

Research has shown that whiplash patients under chiropractic care have an improved recovery time.3 It has been proven when the spine is properly aligned after a whiplash-type injury that pain, muscle strength, range of motion, and neck alignment improve.

If you have […]
