The Mayo Clinic Defines a concussion as a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) that is most often the result of a blow to the head. That MTBI may occur because of a car accident, a fall, physical abuse, or even a sports related injury.
Though, it is important to note that a loss of consciousness is not necessary for a concussion to be defined as such. That means unconsciousness is not necessary for a person to experience post-concussion syndrome.
In fact, the severity of the blow to the head and the initial concussion does not determine the risk or onset of the post-concussion syndrome. It will occur in most people within the first seven to 10 days after the initial injury, and most of the time it will leave within three months. Though, it can last for Up to and more than a year.
Your Child and Sports Related Injuries
Now, if you are the parent of a child who plays sports such as football, soccer, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, rugby, or various other contact sports, you should be aware of the risks your child faces. It doesn’t take that much for a person to sustain a concussion.
When your child suffers a sports related injury that causes a concussion, is important understand that you cannot suffer a head injury without also suffering a neck injury. That injury to the neck frequently causes tractioning of the brainstem and the spinal cord. That means that injury could lead lingering symptoms known as post-concussion syndrome which could manifest itself as headaches, emotional and behavioral problems, problems concentrating, and more.
Realigning Your Child’s Spine
If your child has suffered an upper neck injury as a result of their sports collision the upper neck can be realized by a precise upper cervical correction performed by a specially trained chiropractor. This upper cervical chiropractor will thoroughly evaluate the alignment of your child’s head and neck and determine if the misalignment has occurred. Using three-dimensional x-rays the Doctor will be able to calculate the severity of the misalignment and how best to correct it.
