If you feel tingling or numbness in your hands or fingers, there is a reason for it. It’s a sign of an underlying condition that you shouldn’t ignore. Here is a list of those conditions that that tingling or numbness may be warning signs of:
- Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) – This is caused by the compression of the blood vessels or nerves between the collarbone and the first rib. People who suffer from this may also experience pain in their shoulders or neck.
- Pinched Nerve – When surrounding tissue places pressure on the nerve, it hinders the nerves from functioning properly. This can cause pain in various places throughout the body.
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) – This is due to compression of the Median Nerve in the Carpal Tunnel, which extends through the wrist into the hand. CTS is the manifestation of an irritation to that nerve.
- Herniated Disc – There is a disc—a spongy substance—between each vertebra, which keep them from pressing against each other. A Herniated disc, also called a Slipped disc, is what happens when one of those disc slips out of place causing the vertebrae above and below it to grind against each other. The tingling this causes will be felt in the feet or toes if the it is the lumbar spine or lower spine that is effected.
Overcoming that Tingling
As we said at the beginning of this blog, if you feel any tingling in your hands, fingers, or anywhere throughout your body, it’s important that you have an upper cervical chiropractor examine it. They can examine your upper cervical spine (a common underlying source of numbness and tingling), for any misalignments that may be the underlying cause of those conditions listed above.
When those two vertebra are out of alignment by only ¼ of a millimeter, it places enough pressure on the Brainstem that it hinders the brain’s ability to communicate with the body. An upper cervical chiropractor can realign the upper cervical spine, thus restoring the brain’s ability to communicate with the body.
Dr. Tymothy Flory, Dr. James Weiss and Dr. Jameson Wong of Atlas Spinal Care in Upland, California are Upper Cervical Specialists trained by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA). Their upper cervical clinic also serves Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas, Glendora and surrounding areas. They are uniquely trained to correct problems in the upper cervical spine (upper neck). This vital area is intimately connected to the central nervous system and problems in this area have been shown to be an underlying cause of a variety of different health problems.
