Migraine headaches are a debilitating condition that affects as much as 46% of the population globally.1 Migraines are a challenge to properly diagnose and treat for various doctors and health care providers. Many patients who are suffering from this condition know that most treatments revolve around prescription drugs, now many people are looking for a natural way to deal with migraines and other headaches.
Most recently dentists are looking into helping the many people out there with this condition. Dentists have been able to link improper dental forces with migraine headaches, specifically the TemporoMandibular Joint (TMJ) where the jaw connects to the skull.2 The entire head and neck region is rich with nerve fibers and bundles, veins, and arteries making it one of the most complex regions in the body. There is often a relationship between the TMJ and migraines. Dentists are studying the how the relation of the jaw and muscles attached to it play a role in getting natural migraine relief.
This is nothing new for Migraine expert, Dr Timothy Flory in Upland, CA, an Upper Cervical Chiropractor that focuses on the proper position of the Atlas (C1) vertebra. Many patients come in with Migraine Headaches and TMJ pain only to find after specialized test that the cause is related to the Atlas bone. When the Atlas is not in its normal position it distorts the musculature around the jaw due to the extremely close proximity of the two structures. Also the main muscles that move the jaw controlling its position are controlled by the Facial Nerve/CN V, which is very susceptible to irritation when the Atlas is misaligned.
Dr Flory performs a detailed history and examination to determine the exact cause of TMJ, typically Atlas misalignment. A custom adjustment is made which is tailored to each patient. When the Atlas misalignment is correct by an adjustment, it allows the surrounding muscles to return to their proper length and position and the affected Facial nerve to proper neurological function. It is common when the Atlas and TMJ have been corrected that Migraines headaches resolve naturally.
